Volvo announced that it has begun testing of fuel cells innovative hydrogen car design as the next step to ‘battery-powered electric car for futuristic vehicle transportation technology. To advance the development of this new 2012 Volvo car design project, the Swedish company will use the scientific collaboration of the Swedish Energy Agency and plans to put on the road by 2012, the first two car prototypes based on the C30 DRIVe Electric, also used to move the project forward electric car in collaboration with Ford. The 2012 Volvo car design concept on which the technicians are working in Gothenburg with the ‘contribution of Powercell Sweden AB – already a partner for the design of plug-in hybrid diesel which provided many details – is to use fuel cells as a range extender power using the ‘hydrogen produced by a reformer. Volvo’s goal is to add the 150 km battery permitted by another 250 km range for a total of 400 km. A final decision on the industrialization of this solution will be taken after the experiment and therefore it is unlikely that we will see, however, on the streets before 2015.
